Prof. Mohd. Yunus

Introduction

At present the entire world is in crisis dealing with pandemic and various other issues like economic crash, global warming, poverty, fatal diseases, inequality, illiteracy, unemployment, concentration of wealth, wars and many more other problems are also there. Due to this pandemic the issues like poverty, hunger and under employment are on boom due to loss of lives and resources. The pandemic has broken the backbone of society. Poor people are unable to get out of poverty as they don’t have any resources to meet their daily needs. They stuck in a cycle of debt in enervating conditions, they have lost even the last ray of hope. Looking into the present worldly condition during this pandemic, there is an urgent need to think of measures which can help humanity by any means.

It is right time to think of some business ideas which can uplift and support poorer sections of society by lending them some financial help to start their own ventures or small-scale business.

As a solution, the noble Laurette of Bangladesh Prof. Muhammad Yunus in 1976 pioneered a new idea of business that is Social business. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006 for founding the Grameen Bank and introducing the concepts of microcredit and microfinance. Grameen Bank offer loans to the poor without the need for collateral. It is actually owned by the borrowers, who in their capacity as shareholders elect nine of the thirteen members of the board of directors.

Social Business

Early in the history of the Grameen bank, it was deliberately decided to focus on lending to women. Out of 8 million borrowers, 97 % were woman. The repaying of loan was 100%.

Influenced with the noble cause of Prof Younus of Bangladesh, We, the Career Society also decided to opt for certain social business-related short-term courses to infuse our students with social business skills and be on fore front to serve the society. Together we can make this world a better place.

Social Business is a special type of business for Positive Social Transformation or Social Reformation. It is economically sustainable , non dividend business which is entirely different from charity.

It is non profit centric rather problem solving business. Profit if any is reinvested in the business. The investor is allowed to get back only the invested amount but in case the businessman is a poor individual then he can use the profit for his livelihood. We are sure this is going to make difference in the world around us. Social Business is mainly to create jobs and provide support to socially vulnerable group of the society to combat poverty, unemployment, healthcare, environmental issues, illiteracy, cultural and economic crisis.

Seven Principles of Social Business

  1. Business objective will be to overcome poverty, or one or more problems (such as education, health, technology access, and environment) which threaten people and society; not profit maximization.
  2. Financial and economic sustainability
  3. Investors get back their investment amount only. No dividend is given beyond investment money
  4. When investment amount is paid back, company profit stays with the company for expansion and improvement
  5. Gender sensitive and environmentally conscious
  6. Workforce gets market wage with better working conditions
  7. ...Do it with joy
